Our goal is to support the teenagers of Budila to become productive, self-sufficient individuals who contribute to society.
The Challenge
The Romanian government has identified the priority issue of the Roma community as access to basic education, maintaining students in the secondary and superior levels and then gaining access to training for modern professions. Typically, teenagers from Budila do not even finish their education to eighth class. Obstacles include having to stay home to help parents with their younger siblings or with the parent’s work. In addition, many girls are often encouraged to to get married and start families of their own at an early age, and in general most young people aren't motivated to do well in school.
The Project
As of 2012, it is estimated that out of the general population of Romania only 19% of Roma men and 11% of Roma women hold employee status, where as 77% of Romanian men do. This program aims to give opportunity to the young people of Budila to change their lives through education.
The teenagers willfinish their education to each of their maximum potential (ie - learn to read/write, complete eighth class, go on to high school)by having :
-Monthly group meetings by age/gender/academic level to include:
*Regular check in with each teen teen
* Teaching and support re: social/peer obstacles
*Teaching and support re: home/community obstacles
-Monthly contact with school re: each teen’s academic performance and attendance
-Monthly Tutoring by Romanian volunteers
-Monthly home visits to establish/review teen’s individual goals
-Sponsorship for high school in Brasov when teen has demonstrated ability to complete academic milestones and
has motivation to fulfill requirements of continuing education.
As an organization, we also want these teens to gain an understanding of God and the Bible, in order to make a decision about Jesus and have an opportunity to grow in their relationship with God.
